While I don’t care much for him, his POV makes a lot of sense. Sure he wasn’t happy that she married someone else but he eventually respected that and didn’t bother her again. But then he finds out she married a demon who, in all his experiences with demons, are bad people who kill and manipulate humans. You’d also think the marriage was a sham and maize was in danger. Obviously we know that’s not the case as the omniscient reader, but the characters don’t. So chill out a little.
We can hate on him later if he realizes that they’re truly in love and still wants to kill the demon king.
The problem I have with him is that he's just looking for excuses not to let her go. Remember just how much he actually knows. 1: They've been together for months and nothing happened, 2. Her status as demon Queen protects her, 3. The King became a pacifist specifically for her so she's clearly cherished.
If he thinks demons are all merciless killing machines then point 3 proves their love. I thought he was pretty reasonable until this chapter rolled out.
I’m not really going to keep defending him beyond this because I don’t particularly care that much lol. But I still believe he thinks this is all a trick. Like he said he believes she’ll be thrown away and used once the demon king is done with her. 1 could be the long game trick. 2 doesn’t make sense to them because why would it. 3 is basically another long game trick. Why? Who knows how demons work. They’re sneaky the lot of them. (Pretty sure that’s what humans think. We even saw Maize doused with holy water nonstop and they still couldn’t believe her. So it makes sense that none of this makes sense to them)
I’m ready to hop on the hate train if he ends up becoming “I know you’re peaceful and will love each other honestly. But I’m going to kill you anyway.”
I totally see where you're coming from. I'm just giving my own take on the situation. I can pretty much agree that the reasoning for everybody else is just demon = bad, but for me it feels a bit too much like he's trying to justify his obsession rather than objectively thinking about it. Different strokes for different folks?
period. And it doesn’t help when he doesn’t realize that Maize has already dealt with enough emotional baggage from him giving her a traumatic experience in their relationship. I mean he cheated on her with like what 3 people and a crowd of ladies??? Who wouldn’t be traumatized by that. He shouldn’t still expect to be accepted back just because he became a knight and all. It’s just obsession at this point because he expected that person who used to love him so much back then would stay the same even if he played around That’s why even if I can understand his point of view about demons =/= are bad just like how the general public in the story views it, it also means that him trying to “save” her is still translated to toxic obsession. Like bro that smile when he “found out” that Maize’s husband is a demon is a huge ass red flag. I would have understood his concern if he wasn’t so creepy about it.
Everyone is so mad at riftan for yelling which sure, not the best way to have handled that.
BUT he was 1000% in character. He’s not the perfect Prince Charming who’ll say and do the right thing all the time. He’s always been rough and tough and that’s why I loved him from the start. He tries to treat her delicately but he’s still clumsy at times and can get emotional— those emotions in this case being anger. But you can always tell that no matter how angry he is and even when he snaps, he still loves her very much. And I think this is a good chance for her to realize that no matter how angry he gets at her, he’ll never hurt her because he loves her. She still doesn’t realize that.
And I think this is great because we have a chance to see him grow as a still flawed person. We get a chance to see him learn how to deal with his wife differently from how he’s learned to deal with other people. After all he spent most of his time in the army. And hopefully we see her grow more of a backbone after this. I don’t want her to lose her stutter, but I think she can grow into it confidently.
And I’m here for it.
Aside from the last chapter which is literal grooming, the rest were actually all legal aged.
And it seemed that it was always the younger one that wanted the relationship. The first one didn’t even have romance in it. So I don’t really find this to be problematic, except for the last chapter which is ew
Is it too much to hope that the bdsm in this actually follows proper bdsm etiquette?
