This author has a TALENT for redeeming flawed characters. I genuinely did not expect the story to take such a lovely turn considering how unfair the ML was to the FL. also, HOW HIS MOM STRAIGHT UP DIED AND WE JUST GONNA SKIM OVER THAT LOL??? LIKE SHE WENT INTO LITERALLY PSYCHOSIS AND HER TRASH EX HUSBAND DARED TO BRING HER FLOWERS. WHEN. SHE. IS. DEAD. ???!!!!
“I really like my childhood friend but she doesn’t see me as a man”
“Let me sleep with a bunch of other women so I can suppress these feelings while making her hate me”
“Ok I fucked up so I’m going to confess to her in the most insincere way possible while my ex is still in the picture”
“Let me just make the girl I love live the most inconvenient life possible where she has to put up with my antics and also cook for me at night”
This is a shoujo manga and eveything so it’s ok but if your irl relationship has this many problems within the first 2 months, it is hard to say it will turn into a healthy relationship. Also, avoidant partners often create unstable relationships. Not saying what you want, not saying your worries, not saying your desires…it all leads to very difficult problems which take over your life. Love is really beautiful, but it should not be a cause of chronic stress. Thank you for listening
I think it's good to have a less reliable, more realistic kind of boy as the male lead. However, as a reader who has been in hot and cold relationships, I can't help but feel like the male lead is not mature enough for Yoi. Yoi is honest, courageous and shy. She's always doing her best for him, as all shoujo heroines. Yet every trial this couple has makes me lose confidence in Ichikawa. As a rich boy, I understand that his character is designed to be carefree and inconsiderate, but if we look at the entire story in retrospect, most of the problems these two have faced (in a month or two of dating) have all been related to Ichikawa being avoidant, pretending like he doesn't love Yoi, making her reach out to him. The main plot device is Ichikawa's lack of delicacy.
In this sense, I feel like Uruwashi no Yoi no Tsuki is kind of similar to a josei manga, with how much the male lead is making us see the reality of dating an avoidant and not dependable boyfriend.
I respect the author with all my heart, I think Tsubaki Chou Lonely Planet was an amazing shoujo with a good narrative. The direction and pacing were very good.
Uruwashi however, feels like a concept that took off in popularity without actually fleshing out a storyline. The characters stare into each others eyes in empty places but don't actually form lasting intimacy. Even after dating, they feel like strangers to each other. I hope the upcoming volumes pick up the pace and include better dialogues.
If anyone labels me an Ichi hater, unfortunately I am not one, I genuinely think he can be very charming and his character design is amazing. Sadly, I think the author missed the mark in character development. To show the sincerity of a character, in spite of his faults, you have to show his inner monologue, his state of mind. However, most times, the author creates a melodramatic situation with very little chance for Ichikawa to redeem himself.
While I'm used to the fluffy kind of shoujo, this kind of "love triangle" really makes me consider what I would do in such a situation...There is a part of me who rejects Momo as a love candidate, because he is too unreliable and doesn't fit the bill of the perfect husband compared to Mr. Coworker. However, clearly, Sumire is financially independent enough to live without a man, so seeking a financially secure man is not necessarily important in that case. Although there is real love between her and Momo, I wonder if Momo will become a more reliable guy for Sumire (like not depending on her for a bus fare...). At the end of the day, who you spend your life with has to be someone who makes you feel safe, that is why values such as loyalty, financial security are so highly esteemed. But emotional safety is also another factor which predicts long lasting relationships...

my god he is so cute
