They mark the ears in this universe, not the neck.
Josh has a bonding mark on his ear where Chase bit him. That’s why he wears the band aid on his ear. Not all omegaverse stories use the back of the neck as the bite spot, ear and side of the neck by collarbone have been used as site marks as well.

If I remember correctly, that evil lady lead that one guy to a divine wolf spirit so that he could kill him and gain power—which they’re trying to do again with our ML. I’m guessing that flashback is that wolf spirit in his human form
