Everyone's confused so summary up to chapter 3: our neko was a beggar BUT he got tricked by a business partner he trusted and sold to the palace for the harem (once in the harem you're imprisoned there and can never leave). The servant ladies who are supposed to be working for neko are abusing him instead. He's rarely visited by the emperor and they don't do full sex when he does visit, so everyone assumes he isn't like by the emperor. Frustrated by being stuck in this situation he makes one last effort to see if the emperor will be kinder to him, and then when he's refused again the neko tries to murder the emperor. Neko is imprisoned for this. But in a shocking twist he's released from his jail cell and married to the emperor! It turns out secretly the emperor loved him this entire time! Now he's the empress and can no longer be bullied by servants. Now in chapter 3 he's loved by his husband the emperor, he's treated well by the servants, and he has a life of wealth and full sex.

This feels like subtle nuerodivergence representation (being overwhelmed by his 5 senses). I'm always a fan of any rare disability representation in manga.

I think the hand holding being effective enough for most guiding tasks is key for why this story is pretty wholesome and positive; especially compared to every other guideverse story. The other stories make guides into basically medical prostitutes, so they have a lot of drama and tragedy

What kind of disturbing child uses the skill for talking to animals to torture and kill them?

They really pulled the "bullying is done because of a crush" lie for this plot. If you really like someone you won't torture them.

The Monk is such a jerk. He thinks he's doing this to teach the kid humility, but it's obvious he actually just resents that the kid is naturally skilled and wants to punish him just for that. It's so juvenile to take your frustrations out on a kid.

This is more realistic about gay couples than usually Yaoi written by women or Bara written by gay men is. It feels like a third genre.
