I think it’s because although spirits are agender and therefor you can use any pronouns. The MC has lived 17 years as a girl and identifies with she/her. So although technically using he/him or they/them pronouns isn’t incorrect, it’s still rude since that’s not the pronouns she identifies with. It’s like if we used she/her with the spirit king. Not incorrect but still not something you’d do.
