The mother... is a bit hypocritical. She wants Tsukiko to be able to smile again but looking at her effort... It's not very reasonable :/. Okay, she did separate home with her husband to live in a place where there's more memories of Tsukiko before she lost her memories. But SHE herself, as an individual, as a mother, is not committing enough to make Tsukiko happy. Of course it would be gloomy and sad to hv your children lost their memories, to forget about who they truly are. But neglecting them emotionally is bit too much I'd say :(. I like this book, it's very soft, yet dark. I learn a bit. This is the third time I read this book.
