late response, but yes, he died. there could have been a number of reasons why he did die since for one, he was starving himself, and two, i'm sure what that author did wasn't normal. i think the moment he saw his brother, he was already dead. remember, he said he was beginning to feel faint. that is the part in which he passed away.
No he didn't die because in the last panel you can see him holding and licking the bone (his brother's) while being in the lap of th author. So no, he isn't dead. The whole faint part would be due fatigue and also his eyes were being covered by the cloth.
