He changes in this timeline because he can't brainwash doroa, so he has a real relationship human being with duroa and managed to fall in love and become slightly better than he originally is (he won't kill because duroa clearly told him to not kill anyone)
In the original novel, when his brainwash work on duroa, he killed a lot and even coldly told duroa to die for him
He's a villain, who changes to be better because of transmigrated FL like the other isekai manhwa
And somehow i can still understand all the hate, yes he changes, but he's still toxic, but i myself don't hate him, just slightly annoyed, but i still accept him as ML and wait for his more character development
reread this manhwa and you'll know why he did what he did. he wasn't acting cold towards the FL...in my eyes he wanted her to stay out of his shitshow life even tho he loves her. there is a reason for every single thing he did i suppose because they showed us while he received the tea from her the cup was poisonous and he didn't want to drink it and he told his servant who poisoned the cup to drink it but couldn't tell the FL because he thought she won't believe her. there is a reason for his cold behavior over the past 10 years. he is trying to clear up the misunderstandings one by one now that he has power. he brainwashed the everyone in his home because everyone wanted to kill him...
It's just like villain's savior, the ML is originally evil and killed a lot in the novel, but FL stopped him before he kill anyone (so he never kills in the new timeline with transmigrated FL), same as nocton, that ML from villain's savior also still has urge to kill someone but held himself back because of FL
Last time when aaron puked blood, it's mentioned in the novel version (the actual novel of this manhwa, not 'the novel that read by FL in her previous life') that nocton attack aaron with killing intent, but he managed to held himself to not kill aaron because doroa is standing close to aaron, it's mentioned in the novel that duroa can get affected by nocton's magic when she stood so close to the target (aaron), and nocton also remembers duroa doesn't want him to kill
And alice's dream about nocton hypnotize aaron to stab alice and stab himself is actually true... That will really happen if duroa, alice, and aaron comes to nocton's tea party... In that moment, duroa stood far away from aaron, so she won't get affected, and nocton can blame aaron despite duroa will still be suspicious of him
None of that excuses his shitty mad toxic behavior you're really deluded. And he doesn't really "love" her. That isn't actual love. Idk if you've ever been in a relationship or seen a really healthy relationship but what he feels for her isn't love, its infatuation.

He keep saying "come again, valrose" in the same manner, same time, same pattern, to make sure his brainwash work on duroa
His reason to brainwash duroa is not bad tho, he just doesn't want her to leave him
That's why he doesn't want to call her 'duroa' because he doesn't want her to leave him
In this chapter, nocton called 'sheryl' despite he usually calls her 'lady bernaine' to stop his brainwash on sheryl, that's why nocton told duroa 'i gave it back to her' (maybe he giving back her own consciousness or something)
Also chapter 11 page 2 or 3, nocton said "valrose is changing, is the hypnotize spell fading?"
So the thing is, nocton is under impression that duroa approached her because of hypnotize/brainwash, but he end up genuinely like duroa and want to wake her up by throwing her gift to the lake
After that, when duroa stopped coming to his house, he missed her and regretted that he wake her up from the hypnotize (when actually duroa doesn't get hypnotized at all, nocton is totally misunderstand)
So the time duroa came to his house again, nocton hypnotize her again by keep saying "come again valrose" and refuse to call her first name, because if he call her first name the hypnotize will break (read chapter 16 page 7-8)
And after duroa get engaged and refuse to come to nocton's engagement, nocton wonder of his hypnotize spell is fading (chapter 11)
So yes nocton try to brainwash duroa, but he can't, her brainwash doesn't work on duroa, he also can't read her mind, but he thinks duroa approached him because of hypnotize, he has no idea that duroa approached him on her own accord because duroa thought nocton is ML
i reread this manhwa so many times and i'm not saying that i'm totally right on this one, you could be right but i talked a lot about this manhwa with novel readers and translators and there so many missing facts that we can't say anything for sure.
i remember asking about this and one of the novel readers told me that he already said that "there is no spell on you...i didn't put any" somewhere so..i will ask about this whole thing again and if they know i'll make sure to let you know^^
I also read the novel myself, but i stop at the scene where nocton ask duroa to get back with him and said he will do anything as long as she can forgive/accept him back
And i admit this manhwa is confusing, the novel is also confusing
That "there's no spell on you" is news to me, and it's totally contradict chapter 11 and 16

yes it's confusing...but idk why i enjoy reading this manhwa so much and i normally don't like the villain vibe of the male leads but surprisingly i love Nocton, i myself am confused about the reason that i like this guy since the first chapter.
