In the end, isn't it about life choices. Situations like this happen all the time, sometimes it works out and sometimes it dont. As per character development, the smoocher/sex addic dropped all ties and restrained himself. That's pretty big for him and he went freelance to be independent as an adult which he has never done in his life.

I think its was easier for him to blame others in order to justify his bad decision but when he left both of them he did finally blame himself hence his chances in life.
