For some reasons this is giving me Blood Bank vibes. Both have amazing world building and plot, and the 'us against the world' trope which I love.

The one who suspected Jean most strongly yet also trusted him most strongly was his old friend, Nathan Wickham. While not understanding Jean's attitude on the day of the revolution, Wickham didn't dare suspect that he had hidden the Crown Prince's body. He didn't seem to think that his sometimes boringly upright friend would have thrown ashes on the great work they had prepared for so long. Or perhaps he didn't want to believe it.

In that time when pure loyalty and obedience to ideology cast a sharp blade pressuring everyone, he stood on the execution ground for "having elitist thoughts." As the former knight grew older, the purity of his youth faded and he began to become familiar with political power and schemes, he became dangerous, so none other than Jean Erhardt decided to put him on the guillotine.
By then, not many of those who could be called the main figures of the revolution remained, and Cornell was always by Jean's side, so once he made up his mind, it was an easy thing to accomplish.

The world after the revolution was different from what the ideology had shown and depicted. A world where everyone held wine and bread in both hands laughing and chattering was not there. It was bloody, full of contradictions and intrigue, and ridiculously, inequality was rampant. Discrimination and violence with slightly changed names lurked everywhere, and some people longed for the past, while others longed for a future that had not yet come... no, that they believed had not yet come.
It was a time when days continued where he couldn't know at all what he should do, or what he could do in that world.

As he collected the body of his old friend at the deserted execution ground, Jean whispered words to his friend that he probably would never hear again. Maybe the one who should have remained here was you, not me. Maybe that would have been the right choice for everyone. Who could know that answer? Only God would know. But...

That was all he could say out loud. He picked up his friend's silent head, made the sign of the cross, and promised alone. I will atone in hell, my old friend. Do not forgive me. I will gladly offer my neck there.

Lost all hope for this. I cannot believe I was desperate enough to wait for the paywalled novel chapters to unlock, tragic. The novel is more detailed compared to the manhwa, but that couldn't save the plotline and ass characters - all three of them.

He left when they were in high school but that part hasn't been hashed out completely yet, then the timeskip happened and now they've reunited.
It was some chapters after the events you remember, he went missing for a few years that's why mo's pissed at him

I know it's not my place to complain since I'm not paying for this, but I can't help but feel frustrated with this adaptation. It started off so well, and the art is stunning, but at some point it just fell off. A lot of the nuances in the novel weren't portrayed in the adaptation, and the pacing is so fast leaving no room to actually feel the development of the MC and ML's relationship. Maybe if I didn't read the novel I wouldn't be cursed with such disappointment.

It's been a while since I've read the novel, so you might be better off checking the spoiler posted here few comments back. But to spoil it as briefly as possible, basically the mc saved the emperor before the poison killed him. Mc stayed with raonhiljo at a village outside the kingdom but he went back to sleepwalking which was so chronic that at one point he had to nail his doors shut so that he wouldn't roam arround the village at night. Raonhiljo asked him if he should "let him go" and the mc said yes. Before leaving, mc accepted a name from raonhiljo which was only engraved to one of his eyes, probably due to his nature as half-imae. That was basically the end of the storyline between MC and raonhiljo. MC went back to his house at the imae village, he reunited with the emperor but they didn't really get back together instantly, there's a brief courting period in the village before mc agreed to come back to the palace. They work out their relationhip from there on. Mc found out the name that the emperor was "thinking of" and used that as his artist name.
So yeah, he did end up with the Emperor, he was always meant to end up with him. Their relationship had more depth in the novel, I just wish that was reflected in the manhwa.
