i have this theory. i just thought about it just now so no- i did not look it up online. but if you've already read this idea before then i won't claim this theory lol anyway
i think that eren's goal from the start was not mass genocide, but to be killed by mikasa specifically. why? so that the titan curse will finally be broken. mikasa's an ackerman and eren has the founding titan. so for her to have the willpower to break free from her instincts of protecting him, basically represents ymir also breaking free from king fritz's commands and finally having freedom.
how do i support this theory? there have been speculations that the aot universe is indeed a timeloop - a plot device where time is repeated. this is why in the first chapter eren wakes up like he just "had a long dream".
another thing is i read somewhere in the comments that the part in chap 138 where mikasa wakes up is actually some kind of alternate universe where she and eren both run away from the war. the question is, why did mikasa have those illusions? there's a possibility that eren gave her those illusions so she'd snap out of her "ackerman trance". at the same time they might not actually be "illusions" either, but rather a "past timeline" where eren was unsuccessful in saving both the world and paradis. so i speculate that eren shared his memories of the previous timeline to mikasa so she can find the will to kill him and ultimately end the present timeline.
finally, because this is a timeloop, mikasa saying "see you soon, eren" adds both support and counteraction to my theory. where either (1) the curse can never be broken and eren will simply die, lose his memories, and transfer to a different timeline again where he wakes up at the garden field as a kid, or (2) the curse didn't completely break so eren still has to go to as many timelines as needed i.e. he has to lose his memories, wake up at the garden field again, and repeat everything that happened in the story over and over again in order to destroy the timeloop and ultimately the titan curse.
either way this just goes to show that eren has been THE VESSEL for salvation and freedom. every bs we think he pulled was just to lead to the single moment of cutting off a 2000 year old living-hell. so calling him a villain is not accurate because if anything; he is a victim, a slave, and a hero.
idk if that made sense but you get my idea lmao
