From my understanding, it seems that Sungha used to like Sooin more than a friend. because of Sungha’s mom point of view toward gay people (aka viewing them as disgusting), he probably had a hard time accepting it. It’s only become worse when she probably and most likely kill herself because she can’t accept her son might be gay, leading him to feel it is his fault that his mom died and hate gay people. What he had left for Sooin in the present is probably a mix of love, hate and a pinch of possessiveness.
