I think it's because the king knows how useless his son is and with Eris the kingdom wouldn't suffer. I read spoilers that it's because the queen was friends with helena mom when they were younger but helena family lost their title because of eris dad did something. So the queen hates eris because of her father and in turn made the prince hate her too because the family isnt part of their party. The king basically wants to have peace by joining the two factions together by marrying eris to the prince since they're both from different sides. The queen isnt really helping herself cause like you said she should know better about the importance of status, but she's just butthurt about her childhood friend losing their status. Honestly I just want Eris family to just take them all out lol, the king deserves better cause his wife is causing unnecessary rumors to spread and the prince is a joke. I know helena doesnt have much power but her influence on the prince should be put to good use and stop eris from suffering. Cant stand her just standing there watching with a smile on her face. At first I thought it was a scheme but apparently that just how she is which makes it worst cause for a girl of that time and place she is really something else.
