I have a feeling we’re confused since it’s all from the MCs pov, he’s becoming an unreliable narrative since his mind is slowly becoming shattered. He’s being manipulated so badly by the ML that he’s not sure who or what to trust, but also can’t stop being with the ML no matter what he’s done and/or doing.. it’s really well written In my opinion. I love that there’s not much explanation for us since the MC is also not getting the truth.
