He has never dealt with what his father did when he was little and probably still feels that there is something wrong with himself which equals a good bit of self hate a doubt. He "found" Sam he had someone that needed him again (thought that his father needing him was the only think holding the kid's sanity together then he got kicked out as unneeded and was feeling that he was worth nothing and then Sam finds him) he is hating himself here for just watching Sam worry and struggle and how that made him happy. Basically he found out that Sam had parents who care about him and this made him jealous and he started to think about their relationship till now and is mentally beating himself up for every meanish thing he did to Sam. Not a good state of mind to be in when the worse trauma in his life greets him at home. Kin's answer is right, but I tend to like picking things apart.
