He could have easily seen him as an enemy or someone he needed to compete with for his father's affections. And, I think it's nice and refreshing that he immediately went big brother mode and stood between his POS father and Kyle to protect him.

I know we're about to get a backstory and the foreshadowing is really lovely.
I enjoy how smart she is and how she doesn't cower in front of anyone. BUT, so much time is spent on her inner monologue that it feels like everything is moving so slowly. Also the romance dude feels so random when the plot is moving this slow.
