He actually did care about and loved the baby and Veronica very deeply! He didn't have as much power in the first life and the duke had been keeping tabs and spies on his every move, that's why he couldn't do as much as give Veronica a signal as to what is happening because he was afraid she will get hurt in the process. When he finds out that she was killed and the original daughter of the duke replaces her again, he immediately killed her and lived as a single dad with him and Veronica's kid.
