I feel so fluffy inside every time I read this. But I think Rikkun should not have called them monsters in his speech and stuff because it's quite demeaning - would have lost points with me

I don't think he had any other name to call them. Monster seems to be their official species name. I think if he had tried to call them something else no one would know what he's talking about.even the laws were called anti monster. And they referred to themselves as monsters. I don't think it was meant to be demeaning. It's just what the were called in the story

Lol, political correctness even in yaoi? xD That makes no sense to me. Why call someone something other than what they are? Honestly, if he were to call them something other than 'monster', that would imply that the term is something bad, even when it is just what they are called, like the term 'human' for Riku. What is wrong or rude with 'monster' anyway? It's the way they're treated that's bad, and not what they are! (It's like calling a Japanese person 'Japanese' being offensive somehow. I just don't get it...(/) =_=)/)

Obviously they are not human. However the definition of monster is : a large, ugly, and frightening imaginary creature. Monster is therefore a derogatory term. They could have called them mutants or something similar. Humans called them monsters because they are not human and they are not being friendly about them as they even segregated them from themselves.

I don't think he is actually calling them monster in the way we think of it. You have to consider that a lot is lost in translation. Many Japanese names tend to translate literally as words like "wind","happiness", etc. So when the names were translated over as monster, it's not that it was a derogatory way of calling them.
