Becoming paralyzed or an amputee would be a bit much but a broken arm or leg to take him out of the competition this year would suffice. It would give the pair time to talk and show that Leo isn't so self-centered and JJ is going to speak his mind. I could see Leo hiding from the people he cares about how devastated he is and JJ was ready for a lecture already (though to be fair, we don’t know if he had time for the pit stop before the accident occurred; going from two laps to one lap is the same bartering you do with your mom to get at least one piece of candy.)
