I think it's bc he's not actively enduring his trauma (idk how to word it) I mean like he's out of the situation where he was actively being exploited and abused, so his body tried to rid the trauma by 1. Forgetting and 2. Getting rid of the pearls, but now even though his memory of his trauma are back, his physical "symptoms" remain gone. The teacher feels guilty enough about the situation to go to a cocktail mixer to try and find another partner, which ends badly.
They both have trauma that they have to work through, and they both hold off on becoming official until after the alpha has graduated from high school. They start living together as a couple and finally sleep with one another when he goes to college.
In the interim, they spend time together in a more platonic way (like studying for exams) for the most part.
There are some really close calls, though, and some mentions of past/present SA with other Alphas. But the teacher seems to feel very strongly about waiting and the Alpha/student feels very strongly about not pushing the teacher bc of past trauma.
