There are plenty of adults who simply have very strong parental instincts that would act like a parent to any child that needs a parent at the moment.
None of this has to be sexual in nature. And I think the author made plenty effort to make that clear in the first chapter.
Whether this will continue to stay this way is the make or break for this comic.
