It's true. Superstition like that is the cause of many unnecessary deaths. From twins to malformed children to witches. People have died for the ignorance of others throughout history. In some countries, it still goes on. When China was limiting its birthrate to one child per family, females were left in the woods to die from exposure, drowned and in best case scenarios, hidden away. The government was behind that social experiment failure. They failed to take into account that, traditionally, males were preferred for their strength, social position and ability to provide for the parents in old age. When they limited the birthrate to one child, they created a situation where several generations were predominantly male. Yet, one woman was not allowed to have more than one husband. So, procreation was limited long after the birthrate cap was discarded. Whether it is superstition or a failure to take consequences into account, ignorance has always been the cause of unnecessary deaths.

In the early part of the 1900's - around 1918 or 1920 - my own grandmother drowned her daughter because she was born with what is called a "veil". Basically it is a thin layer of skin covering the face. It is completely harmless while the child is in utero, easily removed at birth and causes no long term damage to the child once removed. Even the scar will have faded to being invisible by the time the child is in kindergarten. Yet, because it is a portent of bad luck and calamity, my aunt was drowned immediately after her birth. Stupid, huh? That is what ignorance does to people. Knowledge is power. If you don't understand something, don't fear it, study it. Learn about it and then you find there is nothing to fear from it. That said, the worst cases of "death by superstition" tend to occur in places where knowledge and information are restricted either politically or religiously. I can't really fault someone for being ignorant or superstitious when the information they need is not available to them.
