Sorry for the essay but this reminds me of indigenous author Thomas King: the truth about stories is that’s all we are. A book about the power of stories. The power that comes with telling a story is you can’t take it back from people’s memories on command.

Near day 100 she starts talking of modern day Japan even though no one would understand in that world. But they are a part of her. The stories about her life or of things she heard or read make her who she is. The punishment was more of a window into Kanna’s true feelings.
