His birth mother died of cervical cancer. Kagami is one of the two women he was most connected to and raised by at the orphanage/institute. That's why he says he has 3 mothers: the one who birthed him, the one who raised him until he was 6ish, and the one who raised him from the time he was 6ish until adulthood (their institutes tend to send kids off on their own way once they hit 18).
