In the novel other characters also think about this a lot. Even Yul doesn't really understand. He feels hungry, but the food doesn't really go anywhere? It fuels him but otherwise just kinda vanishes once he's swallowed it. There are some pretty hilarious moments coming regarding the fact that his body is cotton and therefore can get dirty and the logistics on how to clean him.
