I would argue that the author is taking more of an intersex approach to this story rather than a nonbinary/ agender/ genderfluid approach since the main character’s body is not a “man’s” nor a “woman’s” at the moment.
Intersex people have to deal with not fitting on one side of the typical binary spectrum from birth + tend to have to “choose a side” as they get older to fit in
