I haven't read it in a long time but I'd say it's more like BJ Alex (haven't read yours to claim) but with uncomfy toxic vibes like Painter of the Night (which I still love), at least in the beginning from what I remember. Def worth a read!

So I’m a little confused. How old are they? I assume they are high school, but then they talk about middle school. But in the “present” day chapters, Everyone is in college while JianYi is repeating-which makes me want to keep assuming they’re in high school
Where the series is at right now, everyone is in middle school. The author mentions that in the future, right before high school, is when Jian Yi disappears. Then later, he comes back and everyone is college aged. She gives sneak-peeks of their college lives in some chapters, but it's safe to say everyone is still in middle school right now.
This always freaks out people because they think of the American schooling system ages and don’t look up the China schooling system. It’s different.
But the ages seem similar. There’s a junior middle school and a senior middle school, both are 3 years. So the ages range from 12 to 18 which is similar to America.
