Phon's original mana colour is actually silver/white, while the shinshuu (king/god of the beast) is gold. the black colour appear because shinshu got contaminated by evil magic. When The mana is purified, it will turn back to gold and less harm for Phon when he uses that power).
And by contaminated would that be a curse or it absorbed some black magic from a spell gone wrong?
And besides why are people so surprised when hints were dropped here and there (the biggest one was when he pledged to Mabel). Instead of being shocked about it I was wondering what kind of beast it was.
it absorbed the black magic so it lost its mind and went rampage. Phon only got 1/10 of its power (the beast is dying) and it is more than enough to destroy the empire.
countless mages were dead and the only thing first emperor can do was sealing it in the east region. Galatea's disciple (the woman silhouette beside Rykell in ep 63. the one with high heels is Duke of West) currently rules the area but couldn't do anything about monster nest because the magic protection is too strong. Teenage Rykell & Von Kyle got thrown by Von's father years ago and they managed to go out safely (but cranky) from that hellish place.
the monster is shinshuu (King/God of the Beast), a magical beast with tremendous power and no one can tame it beside the 1st Transcendent of the East (an archmage with beast master ability). the transcendent isolated himself with his "family" (shinshuu, and fire golems-- a farewel gift from 1st emperor to him-) and established the monster mest. his lineage then was continued by his sister with the same talent. Bellerophon's mother is the descendant of this family.
