I can't help but feel that emperor Kaiden's death was merely a plot device to push the romance between Ellisa and the marquis...
to be honest, this story would've been far more compelling even without romance. the story, based on the title, is to focus on Ellisa's relationship with her children after all. Ellisa and the former emperor could have made good political partners, having a relationship built on strategy and necessity ratger than love. and if romance had to be included after all, then Rohan would have been the most suitable candidate, considering how the manhwa had framed him all throughout. the marquis and Ellisa's dynamic was interesting at first, but he was gone for a large portion of the story so it feel so out of the blue. and really, shipping Ellisa with any of these men never really sat well with me since she's married, and it didn't feel like the emperor will die anytime soon (it even felt like he'd have his redemption wth).
lss, I had really hoped there would be no romance at all because, in my perspective, there were no truly suitable candidates. the emperor was too cruel that unless he was given a backstory and a well-crafted redemption arc, he'll never be fit for romance. Rohan, tho Leon favored him, is loyal to the emperor and is engaged to a woman who torments Ellisa. And the marquis, it's shown that he favors Ellisa, and harbors affection for her, but he's gone out of the picture for the most of arcs for their relationship to feel natural.
although I'm not saying that I dislike the ending, perhaps I wouldn't have been able to finish it had I sought to read spoilers beforehand. I did myself some favor for not reading spoilers.

you have probably progressed past chapter 59 by now, but I'll still tell you (in the least spoiler-y way possible). he was stabbed in the back by his sister, Rohan's fiancee, which was kinda part of the crown prince's plan. it was freaking sad and disappointing. I mean, I don't really like him, but I feel like there's still more to his character for him to just die there. ,':(
I love the fairytale/storybook-like narrations, and its colored text boxes. luv luv it
