well no one said anything about the pay. back then, explorers were probably most often sponsored by their government if not self support for a "passion project" due to being well off. he's not a legit professional as we call them today. Even today, those who do research may not get paid much if they're doing their research and aren't tied to an institution.
My interpretation on this doujin is that it's basically saying about how a boy is suffocating in the social environment i.e. school. He doesn't feel like he fit in and dislikes the way other students assume and put others in labels. As a result, he does not talk to the other students and others assume him as asocial, which ultimately bothers him and suffocates him. Most probably he is someone that wants to NOT care but ends up caring about his image anyway. And such, he is drowning. Drowning in his self-consciousness and environment that suffocates him.
