It was a guy who failed ... was defeated in a tribulation and who returned with a new mission to change the past and protect the people he loves that he wasn't able to in his previous incarnation. That story plot I loved. This what you correctly interpret now ... not so much. I agree with OP. I also like to see bad guys get their a$$ handed to them but this isn't even that.
