there is this moment in the novel where the duke explains that Penelope has been his daughter since the day he adopt her. And he don’t know how to take care of his sons, let alone take care of a daughter. That’s why he just let her misbehave & give her everything she wants to “compensate”
It doesn’t justify anything but the novel’s writing make the duke confession seems so sincere & he’s been so observant towards her, even Penelope don’t realize that she held her breath whenever she’s super angry but the duke realized although he dont know what to do, so I kinda melt a bit. But it’s also sad scene because Penelope realize the OG Penelope died from her anger towards the family (she held her breath whenever she’s angry)
