By the time it ends, Kay and Zygril aren't exactly on the same page. Kay is not yet honest about his feelings, and Zygrik is well... A red flag. So many people interpret the ending to be an unhappy one, because it's gonna look like Kay ended up as a prisoner to a tyrant.
But on the sequel, Kay is going to be forced to face his own feelings, and all is supposed to end more happily.
