Guys I understand complaining about unnecessary rape scenes in media but yall HAVE to understand that this is literaly necessary right ? Like arguable Jihos whole relationship with this guy was a form of serf harm for him until his assault reached levels he could not take anymore and switched to physical self harm. Thisnis just ONE instance we get to see him get SAed they've told us this before. I don't know why people keep saying he was out living his life enjoying his time in London while he wanted to die. Just say you can only tolerate victims when their reactions suit ur idea of a victim
Agreed and it shocks me more cause we have a very apt comparison to make abt how differently such scenes are utilized in stories and how ppl react to them.
- Here, the SA scene fits the narrative and is clearly being shown by the author as a criminal/harmful act and not as fap material. Yet so many ppl complain that the author is doing something immoral.
- Then look at a story like Bad Apple, where the SA scene was so uncomfortable and visceral with the victim repeatedly saying no and thinking "I wish I could hit my head n pass out" used literally just to have them gloss over it - and not in a "trauma result" type of way, but in a "oh well he's sort of a bastard, but that's just how he is hehe" . If an author is gonna do that, at least make be transparent that you're gonna sexualize rape for entertainment so that more ppl can avoid thinking of it more realistically. Not only had that author previously mentioned there'd be no rape, the readers also took it and run with it even after seeing that scene?? Like, hardly any comments about how traumatizing that must've been for the character, only gooning.
Neither of these authors are inherently doing something wrong, in the end NOBODY should learn morals from fictional stories aimed to provide entertainment and not real life application.
But the way ppl process them is abit strange. One can argue that in the stories where it IS necessary to show or at least describe/imply SA ppl go nuts and blame the author, whereas in stories where it's completely unnecessary and purely used as a sexual act, ppl don't seem bother and ignore it and continue consuming it as if the story has some magnificent plot and there's some hallmark romance between the characters.
In the latter category I'm not including those stories that are pure vile, toxic stuff with a relevant disclaimer from the start - I'm talking about those indeterminate, in-between ones that have an otherwise "normal" storyline and then BAM they throw in some demented abusive sex scene and ppl just ignore it.
It's fine to just read a story for its porn, even if it's full of problematic elements without any other meaning behind them. BUT at least be honest with acknowledging what you're consuming instead of nitpicking which story you're gonna bitch about including SA and which doesn't.
Lastly, if you're uncomfortable with ANY show of SA, please know that it's ok, but it's also your responsibility to manage, not the author's problem - as long as they've put up a warning.
