I don't think they are lying. I think the heroes weapons have made upgrading conform to the gaming that they are use to so each one is different. This will definitely make teamwork hard to accomplish especially with their history.
You bring up good points there. I like your idea that they level up in a way they are familiar. It makes sense with the way they each say different things, not the shield having one system and the other three having another system. Teamwork between the heroes could be impossible, unless something happens that forces them to learn how to work together. Even then, who knows...
Also, what's with the other heroes' team members? Are they all going to be annoying?...
