Shiro is a white dog god, who will turn into a dog when separated from Kiyoto and will vanish if Kiyoto no longer needs him. Kiyoto is a human, who is possessed by a black dog god. He feels guilty about his feelings for Shiro and this allows the black dog god to take over his body. Edit (spoiler): Shiro is in reality a human, who is possessed by a white dog god. He was taken in by the the white dog god after being abandoned as a baby.

I love reading about these kind of possessive guys, but I would probably be frightened to death if I were to meet one in real life.
