This was better the second time I read it. The first time I wasn't prepared for how fu*ked up it was gonna be... But when I was expecting it, I didn't mind the twisted characters and was able to enjoy it more.

This is tagged as Yaoi but is def Shounen ai. But it's hella good shounen-ai and is written really really well!

A very interesting romance told from a perspective I have not often encountered. Very well done. ***SPOIlER THOUGHTS*** It leans just this side of not pedophilia. But I gotta be honest, this cuts very, VERY close. The urk writes a book about a man falling in love with a CHILD then sends it to the seme and says "I wrote this about us." It's never clear if the urk had sexual thoughts about a child but he said he was in love with the seme when he was still a child?... And the urk continues to have a pen-pal relationship with the seme for 10 years after he left which idk about you but that sounds a lot like GROOMING!!!! But nothing happens till the seme is an adult and moves back to Japan by his own choice. And even after the seme moves back nothing happens for a while until it is very clear it is what they both want etc. etc... So that's why it just barely squeaks by the "This time its not pedophilia" quota for me.

An incredible look at the impact of WWII on two people in love. And how the end of a devastating war changed two people and their place in society. Excellent.
