Ch 40 as of 02/08/22 - Chris Clark - Max Mojave, a member of the Barbiene family (mafia). He’s a successor candidate for the Barbiene boss. - Other Barbiene members: Max’ father, Mr M, Alex, James - 13yo Chris saw Max kill a man by shooting him. The news article with the official police report was different to his eyewitness account. For the next 5yrs, Chris becomes obsessed with following up on unsolved crimes reported in the media. He’s a loner considered to be a weirdo for his obsession. - 18yo Chris and Max start attending the same college. They’re both studying criminology. They end up being room mates. - Chris wants to be a lawyer. Max was sent to college to become a detective after infiltrating the police. - Max killed a journalist at an abandoned orphanage for his last job. Chris followed up on the official report in the news by visiting the crime scene and found inconsistencies. Chris sees Max mimic how he imagined the journalist was shot. Chris asks Max if he’d heard about the San Antonio orphanage, but Max brushes him off. - Chris uses the orphanage case for his criminal psychology presentation. Max approaches Chris to get closer to him. - Max talks about the orphanage case with Chris. It’s the first time anyone has shown the same interest and curiosity as Chris. - Max doesn’t deem Chris to be a threat. They talk about other unsolved cases and agree to investigate them together. - In town, 2 members of the Colletti family recognise Max and follow him with Chris. They threaten Max and Chris at a cafe. - Max feigns ignorance and treats it like a mugging by giving his money to them. Chris is shaken up from seeing a gun inside the jacket of one of the men. He developed a phobia about guns ever since he saw Max shoot a man 5yrs ago. Max hugs Chris to comfort him and calm him down. Chris explains what happened 5yrs ago and Max remembers Chris from that time. - With no money, Max and Chris try to hitchhike as they walk back to the college. Max call James from a payphone to pick them up. Max’ father and Mr M come instead. After Max mentions getting mugged, Chris talks about the Barbiene and Colletti families. - Max’ father privately tells Max to take care of Chris. The next day a gun is left in Max’ locker at the college. - That night Max is dreaming of shooting Chris and starts to cry. Chris checks on Max and puts his hand on Max’ forehead. Max thinks he’s still dreaming and takes Chris’ hand to kiss it. - Max wakes up when Chris jerks his hand away. Max finds Chris in a lounge room with a hard-on. Max masturbates Chris. Before Max can take it further, they’re found by the dorm supervisor. - The next day Chris keeps avoiding Max. There’s a fraternity party that night and Max tells Chris to find him there if he wants to talk. Chris goes there later and Max takes Chris to an empty room. - Chris wanted to just stay friends with Max but they both know they want more. They have sex. It’s Chris’ first time. (Ch 19) - Some students enter the room from the balcony and the room’s owner throws out Chris and Max. - Chris and Max fall asleep on the college lawn after agreeing to date each other and always be at each other’s side. - Chris wakes up in his bed and sees that all of Max’ things are gone. James is bringing Max to see the Barbiene boss at his mansion. Max tells the boss that Chris is his boyfriend and he’ll do anything to protect him. Max is told to kill Tony Colletti who they captured just before he went to college. - Mr M and Alex go with Max and James to a construction site. Max gets Tony out from the trunk of the car. - Mr M secretly loosened the ropes on Tony to mess with Max. Tony knocks the gun from Max’ hands and runs away. He makes it to a local petrol station to ask for help. Max cuts Tony’s throat with a dagger. When Max hesitates to kill the couple that own the petrol station, Mr M kills them instead. - This was a test set up by the boss that Max failed. - Max takes his luggage and drives back to college himself. The boss had told Max that he wasn’t going back to college. The only way to leave the Barbiene family is to die. - Rumours about Max and Chris from the party have spread throughout the college campus. Chris is targeted by bullies who throw soda at him. Max arrives to see Chris covered in soda and he clears out the men’s showers for Chris to clean himself up. - That night they have sex in their dorm room. (Ch 26) - Max and Chris move into an apartment near the college. They have sex on their first night there. (Ch 28) - Mr M took photos of Max and Chris in town and sent them with the location of Tony’s body to the Colletti family. - 4 Colletti men are sent to kill Max and Chris. They’re attacked while in town at a cafe. Chris cowers in fear while Max kills all 4 of them with his gun. James arrives with a car to help Max escape before the police arrive. - Lt Nathan Ravensburg, gang crimes division of the police. - Chris is questioned by the police for his witness testimony. - Chris says Max was trying to protect him because he’s Max’ lover. - The police follow Chris in case Max turns up or the Colletti men target him again. After over a week, Chris returns to college. Max has been expelled. Meanwhile Max keeps trying to escape from the Barbiene family but he is always recaptured. - Dr Harry Ravensburg, Nathan’s father (?) and a top priority client of the Barbiene family. - Edward Ravensburg, Harry’s brother and a movie producer - Chris searches for clues about Max’ whereabouts by looking around the Barbiene territory. He sees Mr M and recognises him from the car that picked them up when they were hitchhiking. - Chris tries to follow Mr M but is caught by him in an alley. Mr M pulls out his gun and Chris faints when the gun is pressed against his face. The police find Chris alone in the alley. - Using Edward’s connections, the DA drops all charges against Max. The police will stop following Chris. Nathan talks to Chris about the report he presented on the San Antonio orphanage. - Nathan leaves an unloaded pistol with Chris to help him with his phobia. Nathan wants Chris to join the police.

She’s granted a special pardon by the Kalcass King under the Babel Queen’s orders after their 7yr war ended with the defeat of Kalcass. - ML is 30yo Archduke Dante Vorde Schneider, 3rd in line to the throne. He volunteered to be FL’s patron. (NB: He has magic powers). - FL’s fiancé was Marquis Victor Sedell. FL’s self defence against his attempted rape of her led to his death. His brother Marcus is now the head of House Sedell. FL’s self defence against her father, Count Voniek, led to his death after he tried to kill her for tarnishing their family honour. - ML’s warm household has several interesting characters of various unique talents and most of them are foreigners: Benjamin Lux the Butler, Marsha the Housekeeper, Sanko the Head Chef and ex-mercenary, the Doctor (female), Juro Vidal the senior secretary and genius lawyer, Jackson the knight (and other businesses). - ML was overseas for a long time. He wants to purge the corrupt power structures of Kalcass, including the courts and laws that wrongfully convicted FL. He will use FL as his chess piece or joker to do so. - ML asks FL about her aspirations and values. She wants to become a better person and take that personal growth as far as possible. She can be of value to ML and will do anything for him (except give her life). She’s very intelligent and a fast learner. In this harsh world she must have that drive for survival and know-how to protect herself. - FL can read the official continental language that is only taught to boys in Kalcass. She is self taught and was further taught by a fellow prisoner who was her mentor. - During the 5yrs she was in prison, FL continually suffered from the cruel mental and physical abuse by the prison guards. Her whole body is covered in scars, her back and pelvis are crooked, she’s severely malnourished, and she has nerve and muscle damage. - FL is part of a strong underworld sisterhood of women prisoners. They promised eachother: “We will never pity each other as long as we shall live.” Later with ML’s help, FL gains access to Speth Prison to collect the remains of their teacher and mentor Barbara Stalla, and to perform a proper burial for her. - Meister manor and military academy: Marcus and some other noblemen challenge ML to participate in this “game”. FL is the masked and mysterious “Raven” who turns the tables on these noblemen. FL provokes then helps the young, recently widowed, Lady Gillian Meister 35yo to safely inherit the manor property in exchange for the academy. - Gillian applies for the formal course on manor management at the Ministry of Finance (ML sponsors her). - ML surprises FL by making her the chairman of the academy which will be open to both men and women. - FL invites Viscountess Judith Pierre from Nova to be the headmistress. - An early reward from ML to FL is a beautiful combat horse from Marma who she calls “Raven”. In the past she wasn’t allowed to touch or ride a horse because she was a woman. - ML’s eyes glow with power to ensure FL wins the dice game at Marcus Sedell’s debauched men’s only social club. - Gillian is sent away from her abusive family for her own safety. Marcus had planned for her husband’s disabled, former student to kidnap, imprison and rape her. To further thwart Marcus, FL visits Patricia who is the Chancellor’s secret lover to pass on intel about the Meister property. - Marcus wants to tarnish ML’s reputation and sends a prison inspector to ML’s estate to interview, monitor and intimidate FL. - In response, FL will have a retrial to prove her innocence so her criminal record can’t be used against her or ML again. Everyone in ML’s household is helping with the preparations. - Witnesses that were vassals and farmers of House Sedell testify about Victor’s character. The captain of their guards testifies on behalf of the servants that day who saw and heard what happened. The prestigious international law institute exonerates FL. - The jury unanimously votes FL is not guilty for murder of her fiancé Victor Sedell. A separate trial will be held for the murder of her father but ML already raised doubt about Marcus who most likely framed FL. Her family manor will be returned to her as compensation. - Marcus attacks ML’s carriage, thinking it has the witness for the next trial. ML accuses Marcus of trying to kill a royal. Marcus will confess to the murder of FL’s dad for a reduced sentence. Marcus is made to recount publicly all of his sins to spare his family before he is executed. - FL reveals her true identity to Gillian when they dropoff the registration papers for the co-ed academy while all eyes are on Marcus’ execution. Gillian is inspired by FL as a role model. - There’s a celebratory banquet for ML’s comeback and FL’s debut. Gillian reassures FL to be confident amongst the corrupt nobles and their gossip. They are the only women in the country to own a manor which is the same as being the family head, and FL also owns the prestigious academy. - The surprise attendance of 1st Prince Charles and 2nd Prince Reginald indicates they see ML as an opponent. - The King’s death is suddenly announced at the banquet but as no successor was named, the country will face great turmoil ahead as the princes struggle for power. - 5mths later during winter, FL is working hard to have the academy ready for spring. She is trying to recruit the highly skilled Larson from the desert tribes as an eminent teacher. - Initially Viscountess Pierre declines to be the headmistress and raises several concerns with FL. After seeking help from ML, FL revises her plan and proposes a separate orphanage to the academy as a philanthropic institution for commoners including the poor to attend. Gillian will be the orphanage director with her nanny as support. Viscountess Pierre finally agrees to be the headmistress. (The orphanage building was the previous gentlemen’s club owned by Marcus and donated by ML.) - ML suspects the King’s death was actually murder. - The contest between the princes is at a stalemate, with ML keeping the balance. - The merchants loudly and aggressively complain to FL about the orphanage. For extra security, FL convinces Larson to work at the orphanage as a teacher and also a role model. - To create more positive publicity for the orphanage, ads for patrons are placed in the paper and a shiny metal plaque listing the patrons will be displayed outside the building. Businesses that support the orphanage will be given their own ‘Kind Business’ plaque to display. - The orphanage is set on fire by a luxury goods merchant who blamed it for his poor business. The children are saved with help from the other merchants. FL arrives at the scene on a horse which makes public her horse riding abilities. - FL meets with Patricia who advises her to approach the noblewomen through the academy to support the orphanage. - Gillian and Viscountess Pierre support this idea. - Gillian 35yo has feelings for Sanko. FL encourages her to confess. While it isn’t socially acceptable for women to remarry in Kalcass, it isn’t illegal. FL admits she likes someone too. - Through Viscountess Pierre’s connections, FL joins a gathering of noblewomen for a lakeside picnic. She arrives on horseback. - ML supports FL having more social interactions. - The new Meister academy opens as a general academic school. - Larson finally agrees to be the swordsmanship teacher. - ML is being pressured by the princes to choose a side. - FL stops ML from kissing her. She says what he feels for her is a mirage. She isn’t worthy to stand beside him yet. - Sir Dubner, a Kalcass general. - Sir Harace 28yo, the best knight in Kalcass. - Dubner and Harace make a surprise visit to the academy. They demand the academy trainees be handed over to them. It’s an unofficial draft to conscript the students. - FL suggests Harace become a teacher at the academy instead. - Harace now oversees the knights curriculum at the academy. Larson is responsible for stamina training. - Daphne Monteira 21yo. Her grandfather is the Supreme Court Justice and close aide to the 1st Prince. - To forget about their crushes and look for other men, FL and Gillian attend a masquerade party. It turns out to be a depraved affair full of nobles behaving badly. ML is at the party to observe Daphne because the 1st Prince wants ML to marry her. - Daphne is arrogant, loud, crude and immoral. She makes a scene at the party and removes her mask to reveal her identity. - She announces her pending marriage to ML without knowing he’s there at the party. ML recognises FL but she leaves with Gillian before he can approach her. Later Daphne realises ML was there. She visits the Meister academy to see FL as she’s aware of the rumours that ML has fallen for FL. - FL can see Daphne doesn’t hate FL. She hates herself. - FL wants to help Daphne who FL sees as lost and very lonely. - FL asks Daphne to enrol at the academy as a student. - Later FL tells ML that she wants to be friends with Daphne. - 2nd Prince Reginald and Daphne are irreconcilable political enemies because of her grandfather. Daphne mentions Reginald to FL. Daphne and Reginald might have met in the past at a masquerade party while not knowing their true identities. - To investigate the connection between Daphne and Reginald further, ML allows FL to attend a masquerade party as Raven at a casino with Gillian and Sanko. Daphne is obsessed with masquerade parties and is already there. FL wins a drinking competition against Daphne. - Gillian confesses her feelings to Sanko out of frustration. - FL convinces Daphne to be social friends for now. They meet at masquerade parties and have fun together. Daphne realises Raven is FL and confronts FL who confirms it. Daphne decides to stop drinking and partying. She wants to attend the Meister academy. She refuses to be sold off to marry ML. - Daphne’s grandpa is sick of her debauchery and confines her to her room. She sneaks out and runs away to see FL. Daphne plans to abandon her family and the Monteira name. She asks for FL’s help. Patricia takes in Daphne as a favour to FL. - Other young noble ladies want to attend the academy. - FL and ML happen to see Gillian and Sanko together. - A border skirmish between Nova and Kalcass soldiers brings panic to the people of Kalcass who fear another war. - 1st Prince Charles sees this as an opportunity to rush his coronation for the stability of Kalcass with no King. 2nd Prince Reginald supports war in order to undermine Charles. - ML promises to resolve the matter for Charles. - He leaves for Nova. FL has his authority to act as his proxy. - Daphne is disowned and ostracised by her family. - Jackson helps FL find a safe house for her, Daphne, Patricia and Gillian. It’s an actors dormitory. - Patricia proposes an idea to FL on pushing through reforms for Speth Prison. FL has been petitioning the judiciary to improve conditions at the prison. FL visits Justice Monteira who refuses to consider any prison reforms. FL implies a threat that she’ll seek help from Reginald instead. She is summoned by Charles and she pampers his vanity by describing the prison reforms as a sign of his generosity to even the lowest of his citizens. - Meanwhile ML has reunited with his comrades he had to leave behind in Nova. They confirm the young Nova king purposefully placed bandits at the border in the hope that war would break out. - Assassins target FL at ML’s estate. They’re sent by Reginald. - Jackson, Sanko and more of ML’s comrades kill the assassins. - Daphne petitions the royal family for a new surname. - FL is seen visiting noble clubs, especially the one owned by Reginald. Fearing Reginald’s influence will grow if he champions the prison reforms, Charles appoints FL as the Speth prison inspector. - Eisen Balza, the King of Nova - Eisen needs ML’s financial support - Eisen had a fiancée 7yrs ago… - It’s actually Reginald who is secretly trying to incite a war with Nova… - FL makes her first visit as an inspector to Speth prison. - She visits Barbara’s grave on the way home. ML surprises FL there. They embrace and are now officially in a relationship. (Kiss? Cutoff?) - FL meets Sir Dubner in private. She lets him know before anyone else that ML has returned early from Nova. - Dubner agrees to issue a distraint order for Speth prison after FL advises him that a foreign assassin and a female spy from the savage tribes are among the inmates. In exchange FL will introduce Dubner to ML. - FL makes a surprise visit to the prison with the military led by Dubner. Soldiers will remain stationed at the prison as an emergency force.
