A Witch's Hopeless Wish
I don't even know how to begin summarising the plot of this, it's so brilliantly done and has so many twists. That being said, if you don't want them spoiled, STOP READING NOW!!!! Ok!! So basically, a young orphaned boy is adopted by an earl. The boy became an orphan after his village was burned down, supposedly by a "witch". When he's older he goes searching for this witch. Instead, he stumbles upon a kind young girl who is accused in her village of witchcraft. He helps clear her name, only to find out later that she was the "witch" that burned down the village. She did not do this intentionally, however. As a young girl, her hair started to turn white due to an oversaturation of mana in her body passed down genetically. This caused people to be frightened of her. They attempt to burn her house and lock her in there, but she makes a pact with an evil spirit. In return for her survival, she becomes immortal and the spirit takes the lives of everyone in the town, except for Caitel, our male lead, who was wandering outside of the town's borders at the time. Eleanor, our female lead, attempt to sleep forever rather than complete her contract with the spirit to take the lives of 666 people to regain her mortality. In doing so, she awakens a demon/monster who entered the human world as an immortal and after seeing the worst of humanity, uses humans only for entertainment. He claims to be the only one to understand Eleanor. Caitel learns the truth and accepts Eleanor regardless (though not at first), and while he and Eleanor leave the Earl's mansion (where Eleanor had been taken in) for a few days, the Earl discreetly deals with the monster/demon. That's about where we're up to. I haven't read a manga with this thorough of a plot in a very, very long time. Perhaps not since Dengeki Daisy. It certainly drags in some parts, and the romance feels a little too constant in parts to really get the heart going, but it's cute nonetheless. The characters all have depth, and the layout of the story is very clever in that it allows for the appropriate reveal of twists and turns in the story. Definitely give this a go, but set aside a few hours to do so, because you'll undoubtedly want to binge-read this one.
