Oni to Tengoku
oukay so. still 5 stars for me. Even if the first volume was pretty damn sus— it takes a bit of reading comprehension to look past things and realize that tengoku isn’t a pedo. A manipulative freak and a borderline rapist but I guess aoki somewhat got into that type of vibe. Probably the lack of refusal and all since he pretty much became pliant— but nonetheless a shaky start for them. I do love the composition and art though, the expressions are stellar and the paneling as well. The dialogue comes through naturally too so it’s nice to read. I guess I do like how their relationship develops, how they’re both flawed but definitely not 2d personalities. Aoki with his apathetic outlook and the large to please that stems from his childhood. Tengoku with his pessimistic view towards love, broken trust that made him act out in bad, questionable ways. But for some reason (and insane sex) they’re able to work things out and navigate a relationship like everyone else. I guess their flaws could’ve been fleshed out more but them figuring this relationship out is nice too. Oh and that scene where Tengoku tells aoki that he doesn’t have to forgive even if their family really hit home. Maybe it’s different for everyone but I guess there is some solace to those words. Even for a little bit.
