Year of release: 1979 Based on the Classic "Genji Monogatari" (The Tale of Genji), story written in the early years of the 11th century by Murasaki Shikibu (pseudonym), who was a poetess and lady-in-waiting at court during the Heian era. The work is considered to be the most important work in ancient Japanese literature, a masterpiece which critics refer to as the world's first novel. It recounts the life of Hikaru Genji, The Shining Prince, 2nd son of Emperor Kiritsubo and born from the Emperor's favourite concubine, lady Kiritsubo, who dies when Genji is at a very young age.
