Ai Girl

Ongoing | Sugi Emiko | 2003 released

(()) Intense, melodramatic and angsty student x teacher story. To be honest, as soon as I started reading this, I thought I wasn't going to like it...but, as I read a bit more, I changed my opinion. Overall, I liked it, not only because I like student x teacher theme, which was the main reason I wanted to read it, but I also like dramatic, tragic stories. [May spoil] The ending was sad indeed, but good at the same time in my opinion. A bittersweet tragedy I'd say...Personally, I liked it! 4 Volumes (Complete)

Me and Her Are...

Complete | Yui Asube | 2000 released

A dream...a dream which feels so vivid that it seems like it really happened. Tbh, I don't know if I understood this...So, it's so short that it may seem even random, but I'm sure it's not. Anyway, I can think only of two possibilities...the first is that this is just a dream and what happened in the dream stays in the dream, so the girl simply had a nightmare. But I don't think it's this, as she says the girl's face seems nostalgic. And that leads me to the second option, which seems more plausible and interesting to me, that's that what happened in the dream it's a past tragedy which brought so much pain to the girl that she tried to forget it completely...so at the present time she may have amnesia/repressed memories...

Akira

Complete | Otomo | 1982 released

«✾(())✾» Akira (1982) by Otomo Katsuhiro - The timeless legendary classic award-winning masterpiece that inspired many works of its genre. Simply unique, breathtaking and mindblowing...reading this was a journey full of emotions! The plot, the setting and its visuals, the characters, the art...everything was perfect! Highly recommended, TOTALLY A MUST READ! No other words needed! And I actually don't need to write anything else to remind myself of this story, because it's truly unforgettable! Its essence and what I felt while reading it will always remain in my memory. The anime movie, a landmark in Japanese animation, is also great (a timeless favourite of mine and one of the best ever imo), but I also think it's just a taste of Akira. As a lot of things were left out (a great deal of the story actually) and others a little changed (not just in terms of storyline but also some characters and the parts they played in the course of the story), the development and some parts of the story are different. So, to experience Akira at its fullest, the manga is essential. [[Flipped Translated Publication - Read from Left to Right]] - Note: in the English version the story is set in 2030, but originally it's 2019. Btw, the fact that we'll have Tokyo 2020 - XXXII Olympic Games is truly amazing! Anime movie: available at kissanime and also on Netflix. >> It seems a new anime adaptation is in production!

Metropolis

//Year of release: 1949// 1 Volume (Complete) - available at mangakakalot - //Read from Left to Right// Anime movie (2001): available at kissanime "[...] However, might the day not come when humans also become too advanced and, as a result of their science, wipe themselves out?" - A Tezuka Osamu's sci-fi classic with a concept that is interesting and food for thought. I certainly recommend to read this story (going beyond what for someone could be a too cartoonish art-style), but I also have to say that personally what totally impressed me was actually the visually-stunning anime movie, where in my opinion the concept was explored in a very well-crafted and, I'd say, more captivating way. Simply amazing, a masterpiece...exactly what you'd expect from a top-notch production team such as that! Note: Tezuka said that the inspiration for Michi came from a publicity still from Fritz Lang's film Metropolis (1927) of the female robot's birth scene; and he also liked the sound of the title, so he used the same one. But other than that he hadn't seen the film itself at the time and he didn't even know what it was about, so he said there was no real connection to the film. On the other hand, the anime, which is actually a bit different from the manga, does draw aspects of its storyline directly from the 1927 film. Anyway, for those who haven't seen it yet, I recommend to watch also the film, considered as a work symbol of expressionist cinema and a pioneering science-fiction movie. The oneshot Metropolis by Kuroda Iou is based on Tezuka's work.
