Reverse Thinking

Ongoing | Lee Geumsan | 2000 released

Aaaaand another one for the list of: Good art wasted on shit story. Why do all these good artists have either bad taste or no self-esteem/value when they associate their art to shitty plots? That's quite the mystery considering artists are usually careful not to get a bad image. Guess dumb BL smut comic artists are different. ╮( ̄ へ ̄)╭

Miwaku Shikake - Amai Wana

Ongoing | Nekota Yonezou | 2013 released

Somewhat rough spoilers, because it's needed. Beware. The overall story setup and art are great, Nekota has a talent for making situations good with expressions, cute and serious alike, very talented in making sensual smut scenes that are often creative in terms of angles and whatnot. The comedy, adorable scenes and sexual moments are done incredibly well and with great detail. It's definitely a joy to look at and read. Especially since the dialogue is well written as well. Which makes reading just for the story/romance interesting enough and worth it in and of itself. But the one thing I think is the detriment of this story is the initial encounter/treatment before we get to the actual romance part of the story. It's incredibly bothersome how the MC is treated and his justifiable fear and hate is invalidated. To top it off, the typical nonsensical and straight up idiotic 'you have to be a doormat no matter what people do to you' ideaology of the asians being thrown into it all as well is making it really nasty tbh. And it's odd, because I find myself agreeing with the openly homophobic MC more than any of the other characters. The gay characters were the ones needing more reprimanding than the MC most of the time. Yet the story pretends only he is at fault for anything. Sure, he calls people faggot, but that is NOTHING compared to sexual harrassment and invalidating said harrassment! I mean, really?: Being randomly grabbed? Your fault for being scared. Being literally sexually harrassed? Better go apologize to the guy so he doesn't cause problems for the company! Just, no. He was in his full right to lash out. Especially with the company client incident. WTF was that?? Don't get me wrong, the story is still good! It's just this aspect of it that is really shittily done and you need to be able to shrug it off to enjoy it. Granted, it being somewhat unrealistic/comedy focused and having the typical comic 'they WILL screw, no matter what!' idea attached to it, make it end up as a somehwhat cute love story (if you ignore the afore mentioned), but the mistreatment and invalidation of problems really, REALLY irks me and leaves just a bad taste in my mouth since it is so badly done. Has back then when this came out and nowadays. People need to take serious problems, well, serious. Working them out with care is important. :'D If Nekota had put in effort of making a therapeutic arc or such in which the MC looses his fear gradually rather than just the typical smut trope of 'I feel good after being touched, therefore my problems are nullified', then it could have redeemed itself for the issues. But it wasn't so it definitely can be that some readers will not enjoy it. If you CAN shrug off issues in a plot, then you can still have a good time. As I said, the overall plot idea is great as a setup and the art amazing. Worth a read but depends on taste and ability to read fiction even if it's unpleasant. I suppose reading 'for the endgame' applies here rather well.

Hand to Hand

Ongoing | Koowon | 2022 released

My review: https://www.mangago.me/home/mangatopic/19070082/ The story itself as a base setup is EXACTLY what I always wanted, but it having such creepy, nonsensical and quite frankly rape-y aspects to it make it more of a dissapointment than me screaming with joy. That made it meh, because this is literally the exact same nonsense as a typical smut hentai: abandoning all reason because the MC randomly feels good and then becomes an obedient cocksleeve. XD Great fap material. Great disappointment for those who hoped for something like a romance even in a very small way. The art is really great btw, some really interesting poses, angles and so on. Could have done without the dumb smut ahega-ho faces tho. Give it a try, but don't expect more than just fucking. Because that's all it is. Sadly.

Young and Pretty Husband

Ongoing | Jyoon | 2022 released

I know I shouldn't judge it based on this alone but...the anatomy of this is ALL over not just one place, but all the places. It makes this equally as unpleasant to read as the story itself. Or maybe even more if I'm honest. There is neither consistency nor quality control and sometimes some panels look either like multiple people worked on the art or some panels are heavily referenced or even traced from something else (one kissing panel and some feet come to mind here). Not gonna waste my time with this and I can't recommend this to anyone either.

Aka To Kuro (katsura Komachi)

Complete | katsura komachi | 2016 released

Not a fan of the writing of this one. The start of the story is entirely jumbled, feeling as if you read chapters inbetween chapters and after missing a whole bunch that give you literally ANY info. To the characters, the setting, etc.. It's just info after info getting thrown at you, as if you should already know who the person is or have read their back story. Which doesn't seem to be the case given there is only a sequel listed on MU. Just not a fan of this type of writing that just bombards you with info and you're left to just take it. The overall story is interesting but people who prefer a good flow of story without being left to wonder here and there might not exactly enjoy it. Give it a go, but be warned that there are issues with the flow of the story.

Ore To Joushi No Kakushikoto

Complete | kashima chiaki | 2016 released

Dropping this at the first chapter. There is nothing remotely likable or redeemable about the seme. The MC is a doormat, I could accept that. But the love interest is an absolute obnoxious piece of shit and I do NOT care to see how it's twisted into a love story. Can't stand even one panel with him tbh. He's not the typical cheeky superior who bullies out of love, he's a power abusing jackass with a shit personality. Nothing of interest to be seen with this character. I'm not wasting time with dislikable characters who don't even have 1% of 'he may be a good guy' vibes. Learned my lesson before. :)

My review: https://www.mangago.me/home/mangatopic/19269270/ 1st paragraph = Opinion and observation of 1st story 2nd paragraph = review of 2nd story I know Tsuda is supposed to be portrayed as a dense motherfucker of a seme, but he seems WILLFULLY stupid at many times. This is what makes him so obnoxious. If the translations aren't off, he really isn't a well-written character in terms of a steady baseline behavior. He's just not likable. I'm skipping the entire volume thanks to him and the general writing issues here and there (jumping around in point of view, skipping happneings a character started and not coming back to it/leaving it dealt with lukewarm, etc.). He just makes reading a chore and the writing is somehow unappealing. So I have no idea and no interest tbh if the writing or such changes for the better. So keep that in mind. Granted, the entire story is basically just a big back and forth misunderstanding + dragging it out trope mixture, so that too is NOT a likable setup and worth skipping for those that are fed up with this nonsense. Which I sure am after nearly 2 decades of seeing this be done in the BL industry. (〜 ̄△ ̄)〜 The second couple is MUCH more likable. Especially Saeki. Yet again proving the fact some side couples should have been the main focus instead. Even just the way the story starts is done so much better. The writing seems to have a way different flow and seems more cohesive in a way. Which makes me wonder why the first story was such a weird mess. The romance is a bit of the stereotypical, simple kind but it's still done well and not as random as I thought it'd be. Still has a bit of writing issues in a tiny manner here and there but it's decently done. And despite being somewhat stereotypical in terms of 'sudden love' plot devices being used, it's an enjoyable read.
