Nii-chan (harada)

Complete | Harada | 2013 released

voice typing: that was a train wreck. So many emotions I don’t know how I feel. This was definitely a interesting plot line. You can feel the psychological issues that all the characters go through. The pedophile was in love with Yui simply because he was envisioning himself as him. he had ongoing issues from his past and so he decided to destroy another’s. Along with this, Yui fell in love with this pedophile because of his trauma that the pedophile inflicted on him because of the pedophile that inflicted on him. this is the definition of scary. I feel for the characters trauma but I don’t wish for their happiness and love. truly a one-of-a-kind manga.

Someone Like You

Complete | Euneun | 2000 released

this was an absolutely beautiful story about growth and recognizing that self-destruction is not a healthy coping mechanism. we follow the main character, who has very low self-esteem following many familial issues and grieving the loss of his younger brother. we ultimately see this character, for around 30 years, genuinely hate himself. we see his interaction with the male lead, who is interested in him from a young age and somewhat saves his life and changes his mentality about things. but the two of them drift apart because they’re young and they make mistakes. ultimately, they’re brought back together with the realization that the two have only ever really wanted each other and looked for the other person in every partner they had prior. with this amazing green-flag male lead, we see him push past the boundaries that the main character has and reach happiness with him by going past the safeguards he’s put up—safeguards that have only hurt him in the long run. this is an amazingly well-done story. the only reason that this isn’t in my “best ever” section is because it’s not that unique of a story, but i truly love it. it had amazing pacing, the art was beautiful, and i had no complaints—so i really do recommend this one. please do check it out.

for what it was, this was a very good story. what i enjoyed most was that the plot felt really well developed, and i thought the characters were intriguing. it’s also one of those stories that takes place in the u.s. during the 1970s to 1980s, and i always enjoy when the plot isn’t set in the present—it adds a bit more to the premise. there are certain elements, like the hostility toward being gay, that were really detrimental to the characters and helped drive the plot. i thought that was a strong choice, especially since you don’t see a lot of stories like that nowadays. i also really enjoyed the crime aspect of it. there were a few things that could’ve been fleshed out more—for example, the ending felt a bit rushed. some people said that was because the artist was having a falling out with the company they were working for, so they tried to just finish the story. i didn’t hate the ending. i feel like it was fine. was it perfect? no, but it was still good. overall, i’d give the story an 8.5 out of 10. i’m giving it five stars on here because i’ve rated similar stories the same, but it’s not going in my “favorite reads” folder. it’s almost like if ash and eiji from banana fish had a better ending, which is part of the reason why i liked it. also, the art was quite good, which i appreciated.

this is one of the best psychological thriller stories i’ve read in a very, very long time. what makes it so special is the artist’s incredible way of storytelling. we watch the main character slowly spiral into madness — his train of thought becomes nearly nonsensical, yet we still get this unfiltered stream of consciousness that perfectly shows his deteriorating mental state. as a reader, you feel confused, but in a way that still lets you understand where he’s coming from. what i really love about this story is that both characters are insane — and insane for each other. usually in stories like this, one character is more unhinged than the other, but here, they’re equally crazy and completely embrace it. they are genuinely perfect for each other. the male lead’s shift in perception is one of my favorite parts. we watch him fall in love with the main character and become obsessed with having him. his love stems from the fact that the main character accepts him for exactly who he is — something he’s never had before. everyone in his life either died or was paid off to stay away from him, so the idea of someone literally stalking him feels ideal to him. their dynamic is fascinating. they match each other’s “freak” perfectly. when they first became intimate, the main character gave the male lead head and said it was fine if the male lead threw up on him. by the final episode, the roles reverse — now the male lead is the one doing it and saying it’s fine if the main character throws up on him. that reversal is made even better by the reveal that the main character has been faking memory loss to keep the male lead happy and close to him. so while it seems like the male lead has the main character in his grasp, it’s actually under false pretenses — the main character is in control in his own way. overall, this is such an insanely well-done psychological thriller. it’s dark, twisted, and has very adult themes, but everything is executed masterfully. huge props to the author — this was amazing.

Form of Sympathy

Complete | Park Noduk,Park Nodeok | 2019 released

this was quite the read. i really enjoyed the overall message of this one, and the title being form of sympathy was very fitting. we ultimately got to see that the reason why it was titled that was because the love they were experiencing between the two of them blossomed in the form of sympathy. the two characters both experienced different variations of how they defined the word love, went through trials and tribulations, and ultimately found love—initially in the form of sympathy for one another. i just think that was really well done. i like that the characters are both insanely flawed and at times very difficult to enjoy. i remember reading this and feeling so frustrated, like screaming at my phone because i wanted a different outcome and the choices they were making were frustrating me. but ultimately that’s what makes it feel very human. both of them are very flawed, maybe some more than others, but they come together in the end and the story blossoms into something so beautiful. i also love that yuri is a bit crazy. i always love them a bit crazy, so that was enjoyable. ultimately, this was a really good read.

Cycling Hit

some questions left unanswered: why does he smell nice? why did he get injured? backstory with him and the friend? why was he dead set on him being a batter? do they know how gay sex even works??????? the end was too rushed sadly. the slow burn was burning then caught on fire like tissue paper covered in alcohol.
