Oni Wa Warau Ka

Complete | kimura hidesato | 2014 released
2017-02-25 23:49 marked

Had to spoil it for myself, so I guess no "transgender" tag after all, but I like the story so far. I love this artist, and the sad and strange storylines really get me. I hope this updates soon so that I can actually read it, since I can't read Korean. ETA: The story has gotten pretty gross. It's definitely weird and messed up. Very sad indeed. EDIT AS OF CHAPTER FOUR: Things move very quickly, and it sort of takes away from the story, but the art is beautiful, and the story is sad but kind of hopeful. Fingers crossed that there's a happy ending.

Pendulum: Kemonobito Omegaverse

Complete | hasumi hana | 2016 released

I feel kind of embarrassed for liking this as much as I do. There are things about it that put me off a little, but I can't wait to read more. Hopefully it doesn't start throwing in some of the Omegaverse stuff that rubs me the wrong way. It's a cool concept, and I hate when it gets messed up with pro-rape BS and humiliation. EDIT: Wha? That's it? Wtf. It seemed to end too abruptly. Honestly, I was hoping for more darkness and drama between the main two. I'd actually prefer to see a Juda and Dato specific story. I liked their situation, chemistry, and arc way more than the other two. It was such a nice change from typical yaoi standards. Glad they at least got something in the epilogue, but it's all so rushed. What a shame. Hoping for a sequel.

Downfall

Ongoing | asano inio | 2017 released

I have no idea what this is exactly, but I really like that the mangaka draws such a variety of women! There are traditionally pretty girls, cutesy girls, mature girls, sort of dorky girls, girls who may otherwise be considered unattractive, and none of them are treated one way or another based on that. Otherwise, the story is pretty gloomy, and I'm not sure if it'll pay off in the end. From the first chapter, I can only gauge that it's about a self-loathing, jaded mangaka who can't really tap into joy anymore and lives primarily in regret. He has a loveless marriage and, in his mind, a thankless job. I get the sense that it's going to pull in his past romance, but the title certainly implies a major life crisis. I haven't read this mangaka before, so I'm not sure whether or not to anticipate a happy or sad ending.

Bakemono Recchan

Complete | Asano Inio | 2000 released

Strange and sad little story regarding the worth we put on people based on their appearance and what they can do for us. I like the message, but I wish this sort of story could last longer. It sucks that girls like this, either monstrous in appearance or just outside of typical beauty, can really only exist in some sort of moral tale to highlight the fact that we care too much about looks.

Ten Ten Shiro Shiro

Ongoing | HAYAKAWA Nojiko | 2000 released

I like the unsettling feeling throughout, knowing what kind of man this guy is. I wish there'd been more, though. It's just there and gone, though the implication is enough. Still, it felt like it stopped too abruptly. ETA: Oh, I see that it was incorrectly marked as completed. I hope the next chapter is translated soon! EDIT: What the flying fuck? I was excited to see that it was up to chapter three, but this is not at all what I thought was going to happen. That little kid is like a budding serial killer. This is like a really weird, creepy love triangle. Very disturbing and unsettling. I'm trying to figure out what the point is. The story seems all over the place, unlike her other work, and nothing really happens other than creepy interactions. I want him to just run away from that creepy house and live with his classmate. That kid is totally gonna kill that bird, ugh.

Yatamomo

Complete | harada | 2014 released

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!!! Loved it! So glad I finally got around to reading this one. I love Harada. So far, I'd only had a chance to read her short stuff, which is more heart-destroying than anything. This one definitely made me ugly-cry a few times, but it's all worth it in the end. Such a sweet couple. I love the little family they created with the three of them. I wish there were more adventures with them! I'm also worried, though, because if there's ever another continuance, it might result in the relationship getting all messed up. D: Anyway, loved it. Harada has quickly become one of my top favorite mangakas.

Gintama dj

Complete | Harada | 2000 released
2017-05-17 10:46 marked

Shorter and more abrupt than I would have liked. It was sad and sweet, but mostly it was jut rushed. Again, no clue about Gintama, but I love Harada, so I'm okay with going in blind.

Kago No Tori

Complete | Sasaki Ayumi | 1996 released

The translation is awful, and I've always wanted to go back and clean it up, but I actually like the story. It's been a while, so maybe I need to re-read it, but I actually like the darkness of the ending. I think some of the explanation was lost in the translation, but I don't think it was as black and white as people are making it. Ultimately, the boy just wanted to be free, to be his own person, rather than someone kept by one man or another. The obsession of another crushes out his light, until both the boy and his captor are trapped.

Haru ni Kaeru

Ongoing | KUNIEDA Saika | 2011 released

I love Kunieda Saika so much. I wish all of her work were translated. It seems like she hasn't written anything new for a while, either. I hope I see more of her stuff soon. I'm obsessed. This was an interesting little collection. So far, two chapters haven't been translated yet, so we'll see if that ever happens. Fingers crossed. I liked the first one the most out of the ones that were here, I think. Kinda weird and sad, definitely sorta creepy ending. Like, creepy uncle literally, not creepy as in horror. Hope the other two are translated someday.

Ashita Shinu

Complete | akane sora, akizuki ichiha, anthology, aoi aki, aruku, kai (甲斐), mayama rika, otono awo, yuryi | 2000 released

Very sad, some more than others. I think this anthology showed strengths and weaknesses among the mangaka involved. Short stories can be challenging, writing something satisfying that fills in the blanks and makes sense in such a limited amount of space. The first story broke my heart into a million pieces. I was ugly crying and my cat came and forced me to hold him, which made me cry harder, so there's that. I was super bummed to see that mangaka has yet to produce anything else. I hope that just means she's new and we'll see a lot more from her in the future. Several stories were a little brief and rushed, but the ones that hit you hit you hard. Definitely a sweet but very heartbreaking anthology. Obviously, haha. But it was a good kind of sad. It felt real and emotional. The stronger stories, at least.
