The biggest mistake beginners make when starting realism is over focusing on the details, like painting each tooth's or each hair, every pore and all the wrinkles. Try looking for reference of painting of people you want to imitate the style and lighting of, and use the actual human as just the sketch. Good luck.   reply

draw mix paint on youtube was my favorite when i was learning to paint, try going in with thin layers so you don't completely cover the sketch. i'd be able to give more tips if you could tell me whether you're using paper or canvas, and what kind of paint you're using too!   1 reply

Take your time looking at the face before you start drawing it, and you can take note of what you see and want to draw. Also I recommend sketching a little before going for the paint so you can warm up and have a little bit more practice whit the face.
