Switch to novels, most BL's that aren’t adaptations are straight up shit. While some adaptations are still shit, a lot of them are one of the best in the genre.

The art style thing is less about being adaptations, and more about doing what sells well. If the novel is popular, the author will choose a studio that will choose the art style that is well liked. No manga or anime made me cry, but I can list other relevant stuff. Hotel Del Luna made me cry pretty often (K-drama), It's really worth your time. Mulberry Song is a pretty sad light novel that I read, but ends quite happily, Lament at Changmen Palace is also sad (because It's based on historical events If I'm not mixing up things)
