It's not just yao/BL, it's quite common in shoujo on straight stories as well. As for the characters the "older dominant man" is not the issue but the author that purposely made the protag usually childlike and younger than them. I just love drama in general. And enjoy the romance: wondering what will happen to the chara, will they end together etc. I don't self insert.
