I have the same problem, I lost pretty much all my "friends" both good and the bad ones, my answer is to just interduce yourself, tell them your name, a bit about your family (if your comfortable enough too) then tell some joke after seeing what their humor is like!! my mother has said very cruel to harmful things to and behind me and my three older siblings.
