Not every trope you see in manga started there. My mom has old romantic novels still on her bookshelves (old faves) and many have age gaps.
You really need to diversify your reading. Plenty of novels with silver foxes, daddy bears etc and plenty of people who are fine with age gap. Both hetero and lgbq+ stories ...... reply

I can handle any art if the story is good. Maybe it comes from being a gamer too, playing plenty of old crappy visual games. There’s even that old meme about how you remember it v how it was. Same for stories, my imagination polishes the rough edges.

I prefer uncensored. I find censorship in most forms irritating, including in manga, manhwa, and manhua.
If the manga is adult enough to include a sex scene, then include it.
Pages of glowing white and sound effects are ridiculous and ruin story immersion. It’s like their dick died and only it’s spirit remains in ghost form (⊙…⊙ )

Idk..what straight romances are you reading/ watching? Maybe you need to look in the adult section a bit more (probably help to remember that yaoi is not aimed at kids so ofc it’s going to have more naughty adult bits). I can’t remember watching a straight romance that didn’t have at least some heated kissing ┑(￣Д ￣)┍

I think that there are a few reasons they are so popular.
Sometimes those really well constructed villains can be relatable and/or even a source for empathy. Their own backstories are so twisted we can understand how they turned out as they did and we can’t help but to wish them a different path to step onto.
